Mahama Set to Deliver State of the Nation Address

President John Dramani Mahama is set to present his State of the Nation Address Ghana today before Parliament of Ghana, offering a comprehensive review of his administration’s performance and outlining policy priorities for the year ahead.

Article 67 of the Constitution requires the President to present a message to Parliament at the beginning of each session outlining the state of the country and the policy direction of government.

The provision stipulates that “The President shall, at the beginning of each session of Parliament and before the dissolution of Parliament, deliver to Parliament a message on the state of the nation.”

The annual statement is expected to shape legislative focus and public policy debate, while signalling government’s strategic direction for the months ahead.

The sitting is anticipated to draw a high-level audience, including Members of Parliament, senior government officials, representatives of the diplomatic corps, traditional leaders, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

Economic management is expected to take centre stage as the President outlines measures to stabilise the macroeconomic environment. Attention is likely to focus on inflation trends, public debt management, revenue mobilisation and job creation. The address is also expected to highlight initiatives aimed at stimulating growth, restoring investor confidence and easing the cost-of-living pressures facing households and businesses.

According to officials, the President will present “an assessment of his administration’s performance over the past year and outline policy priorities for the months ahead,” with a strong emphasis on sustaining economic recovery.

Infrastructure development is also expected to feature prominently, with updates on ongoing road construction, housing programmes, and water and sanitation projects nationwide. Government is likely to highlight progress on flagship initiatives as well as new projects intended to accelerate national development and improve service delivery.

In the education sector, the address is expected to outline reforms focused on improving access, quality and equity. These may include expansion of school infrastructure, recruitment and training of teachers, support for tertiary institutions and increased investment in technical and vocational education.

The health sector will also come under review, with anticipated updates on hospital and clinic expansion, staffing improvements and efforts to enhance affordable healthcare. Strengthening the National Health Insurance Scheme and addressing persistent service challenges are expected to form part of the presentation.

As Ghana navigates ongoing economic and social pressures, today’s address is expected to provide a policy roadmap aimed at consolidating stability, accelerating development and improving living standards across the country.
