The National Democratic Congress has ordered an immediate halt to premature NDC parliamentary campaign activities across the country, warning aspiring candidates that breaches could attract severe sanctions.
The directive follows concerns that some party members with apparent parliamentary ambitions have begun organising programmes in constituencies before the official opening of nominations.
After deliberations, the party’s Functional Executive Committee instructed all members involved in direct or indirect campaign-related activities to stop.
Meetings and donations restricted
The order covers meetings, constituency tours, donations, public appearances and other engagements intended to promote a possible parliamentary candidature.
It also applies where an activity could reasonably be viewed by party members or the public as an attempt to gain an early advantage in an internal parliamentary contest.
“The Party considers such premature activities inappropriate and potentially disruptive to its unity, cohesion and orderly functioning,” the statement said.
The NDC warned that members who ignore the directive would face disciplinary action under the party’s constitution, rules and regulations.
Regional, constituency and branch executives have been asked to enforce the order and report violations to the relevant party authorities.
Nominations to open later
The party has not announced when nominations for its parliamentary primaries will open. It said the timetable and guidelines would be communicated at the appropriate time.
General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, who issued the statement, urged members to respect the established process and remain disciplined.
The NDC said it remained committed to selecting its parliamentary candidates through a “transparent, orderly and credible process,” with party unity taking precedence over early campaigning.
