NPP Grassroots Group Petitions Council of Elders over General Secretary's Constituency Election Directive

A pressure group within the New Patriotic Party has called on the party's Council of Elders to advise General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong to resign, arguing that a recent directive ahead of the party's constituency executive elections risks deepening divisions and weakening grassroots participation.

The petition, submitted by the Grassroots Alliance for Victory 2028 and dated July 11, 2026, accuses the General Secretary of pursuing decisions that have left many party faithful frustrated at a critical moment as the NPP prepares to rebuild ahead of the 2028 general elections.

At the centre of the dispute is a circular issued by the Office of the General Secretary to regional representatives, regional officers and constituency election committees.

The communication informed officials that delegates would not receive transportation, food, drinks, snacks or even water during the internal polls, urging participants to simply "Arrive. Vote. Leave."

The group says that instruction ignores the realities confronting thousands of party activists across the country.

Concerns over grassroots participation

According to the petitioners, the directive places an unnecessary burden on more than 300,000 delegates, particularly polling station executives and electoral area coordinators from rural communities who often travel long distances to participate in party activities.

"We respectfully submit that this directive is insensitive to the over 300,000 delegates," the petition stated, warning that asking members to finance their own transport and welfare "will lead to low turnout, disenfranchisement, and potential unrest."

The group argues that such an approach undermines the party's stated commitment to conducting peaceful, transparent and credible constituency elections.

Beyond the immediate logistical concerns, the petition claims the decision risks alienating the grassroots base that has traditionally driven the party's electoral machinery.

The petition also raises questions about what it describes as inconsistencies in the party's explanation for withdrawing welfare support.

While the circular reportedly cited "severe financial constraints," the group questioned how the General Secretary had allegedly supported the payment of nomination fees for some aspirants during previous internal elections.

"If the Party is broke, how is the General Secretary as an individual able to fund nominations for multiple aspirants, while the Party cannot provide even water for delegates?" the petition asked.

According to the group, the perceived contradiction creates doubts about the party's priorities and leadership at a time when unity is expected to be paramount.

Appeal to party leadership

The Grassroots Alliance for Victory 2028 is urging the Council of Elders to summon Mr Kodua Frimpong to explain the rationale behind the directive and clarify the party's financial position.

It also wants the National Executive Committee to review the decision and provide delegates with at least basic welfare, including water, to encourage broad participation and ensure smooth elections.

The petition goes a step further, asking the Council to advise the General Secretary to relinquish his position if he cannot rebuild confidence among party members.

"In the event that the General Secretary is unable to reconcile these contradictions and restore confidence in his leadership, we humbly pray the Council to advise him to step down as General Secretary in the interest of Party unity and credibility," the petition concluded.

Signed by the group's convenor, Enoch Ayim, the petition was also copied to the NPP National Chairman, the National Executive Committee, the party's presidential candidate and former presidents, setting the stage for what could become another test of unity within the opposition party.
