Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has assured newly appointed Majority Leader James Agalga of constructive cooperation in Parliament, but says his central political objective remains clear: turning the Minority into Majority.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, August 27, after Mr Agalga formally assumed the Majority Leader role, Mr Afenyo-Markin said he would not pursue obstruction for its own sake.
“I am saying that you can find in me a friend. My job is not to obstruct you. My job is to offer a different lens to things you may not see,” he said.
Minority Promises Tough Scrutiny
Mr Afenyo-Markin said the Minority would continue to scrutinise government business closely and present alternative positions backed by research.
“I can promise you a well-researched dossier for all my debates. That I can promise you,” he told the House.
The Minority Leader’s comments struck a cooperative tone, but he quickly made clear that parliamentary friendship would not soften the political contest between the two sides.
“My job really, my job really is to turn this Minority into Majority. That really is my job,” he stressed.
He also cautioned Mr Agalga against any attempt to weaken or make inroads into the Minority Caucus as the new Majority Leader settles into the role.
Agalga Takes Over Majority Leadership
Mr Agalga formally became Majority Leader following communication from the National Democratic Congress to Speaker Alban Bagbin announcing changes to the leadership of the party’s parliamentary caucus.
The reshuffle followed the nomination of former Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
Mr Agalga now takes charge of government business in Parliament at a time when the Minority says it intends to combine cooperation with sharper scrutiny.
For Mr Afenyo-Markin, the message was simple: support where necessary, opposition where required, and a longer-term political fight to reverse the numbers in the House.
