Parliament of Ghana has officially commenced the Second Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic, with lawmakers expected to consider 48 Bills and 26 legislative instruments in the coming weeks.
Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, welcomed Members of Parliament back from recess and read messages from President John Dramani Mahama notifying the House of his absence from the country in accordance with Standing Order 51.
Majority Calls For Unity And Economic Discipline
Addressing the House, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga urged MPs to work together in the national interest while prioritising economic discipline, job creation and stronger parliamentary oversight.
He highlighted Ghana’s democratic progress, improvements in press freedom rankings and ongoing economic reforms following the country’s exit from the IMF programme.
Mr Ayariga also outlined the heavy parliamentary workload ahead, stressing the need for effective committee work and tighter oversight to reduce smuggling and improve public spending efficiency.
Minority Raises Economic And Governance Concerns
The Minority Caucus, represented by Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, expressed concerns over economic hardship, intermittent power outages and governance challenges.
The Minority also questioned public confidence in state institutions, particularly the Bank of Ghana, while calling for investigations into issues surrounding the Damang Mine transaction and sports administration.
The resumption of Parliament is expected to usher in heightened political debate as both Majority and Minority lawmakers pursue competing legislative and national priorities.
