Sports Minister Urges Parliament to Approve Funding Plan for Ghana’s 2026 World Cup Campaign

Ghana’s Minister for Sports has appealed to Parliament to support the proposed National Sports Fund to ensure the country is financially prepared for participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Minister emphasized that sustainable and structured funding is essential for the Black Stars’ preparations, noting that modern international football requires long-term investment in training, logistics, sports science, and player welfare. He warned that without reliable financial support, Ghana risks falling behind competing nations that maintain consistent investment in their national teams.

The proposed Sports Fund is designed to serve as a dedicated financing framework for national sporting activities. Officials say the initiative would reduce dependence on last-minute government allocations and emergency sponsorship arrangements, which have historically affected planning and performance.

According to the Ministry, parliamentary approval would demonstrate a national commitment to sports development and position Ghana to compete effectively on the global stage. Authorities also argue that successful international campaigns generate broader economic benefits, including tourism growth, youth engagement in sports, and stronger international visibility for the country.

Preparatory activities for the World Cup are expected to begin months ahead of the tournament and will include international friendlies, training camps, and technical development programs. Analysts say early access to funding could significantly improve Ghana’s readiness and competitiveness.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico and will feature an expanded format with more participating nations, increasing both opportunities and competition. For Ghana, securing financial backing now is widely seen as a decisive step toward a strong tournament showing.
