Tomato prices in Ghana are expected to fall sharply in the coming weeks as local farmers begin harvesting, Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture John Dumelo has said.
The fresh supply should bring some relief to households and food vendors struggling with the recent pressure on prices.
“The prices of tomatoes should see a sharp decline in the coming weeks as Ghanaian farmers have started harvesting,” Mr Dumelo wrote in a Facebook post on Monday, September 7.
His forecast comes as the government pushes to increase domestic production and reduce the seasonal shortages that frequently send traders across the border in search of supplies.
Dry season production targeted
Attention is already turning to the next farming cycle. Mr Dumelo said preparations were underway for large scale dry season tomato cultivation between December 2026 and June 2027, particularly in northern Ghana.
Land has been cleared in several production areas, while nursery development and transplanting are expected to begin in October.
“We are also actively preparing for large scale dry season tomato farming from December to June next year,” he said.
The ministry has provided farmers with solar powered boreholes and irrigation inputs to support cultivation beyond the rainy season. The intervention is expected to keep farms active during months when local output traditionally falls.
The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has separately confirmed that irrigation infrastructure is being expanded across northern Ghana to support year round vegetable production.
The programme includes 25 solar powered boreholes intended to serve farming communities across five northern regions, according to an official ministry update.
Mr Dumelo said the immediate harvest and planned dry season expansion should improve supply consistency and reduce sudden price swings. The real test will come after the current harvest, when tomato availability usually tightens and prices begin climbing again.
