US President Donald Trump has warned Iran of potentially devastating military action if negotiations fail, while expressing confidence that Washington and Tehran could reach an agreement after November’s midterm elections.
The Trump Iran UN speech, delivered on Tuesday, September 22, saw the American leader defend his administration’s military campaign alongside Israel and insist that Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon.
“While others have talked, I have acted,” Trump told world leaders gathered in New York.
His remarks came nearly seven months into a conflict that has disrupted Middle Eastern energy markets and international shipping.
Trump Presents Iran With Two Options
The President said Tehran had rejected earlier opportunities to negotiate an agreement addressing its nuclear programme.
He described the next stage as a major decision for Washington: pursue an agreement that would allow Iran to recover or consider further military action.
“Do I drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations?” he asked.
Despite the warning, Trump said he expected an agreement after the November congressional elections.
He suggested Iranian leaders were waiting to assess the political situation in Washington before making concessions. That was Trump’s assessment of Tehran’s calculations, rather than a confirmed position from Iranian officials.
Trump maintained that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remained the central objective of his administration’s policy. Iran has consistently denied seeking nuclear weapons.
US Dismisses Concerns Over Weapons Stockpiles
Trump also rejected suggestions that declining American ammunition and missile interceptor stocks were limiting his military options.
He insisted that the United States possessed substantial weapons reserves and was replenishing supplies rapidly.
The President called on other countries to increase economic pressure on Iran until it stops attacks on commercial shipping, abandons nuclear weapons ambitions and ends support for groups Washington designates as terrorist organisations.
The administration’s approach combines military operations with sanctions and diplomatic pressure.
Foreign Policy Takes Centre Stage at UN
Trump used the address to present his administration’s international record as evidence of his willingness to act where previous leaders had relied on negotiations.
He also highlighted the end of the Gaza war while preparing for meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Gulf leaders and Venezuela’s Delcy Rodríguez.
The engagements come as continuing tensions involving Iran and Ukraine weigh on energy prices and global trade.
For Tehran and Washington, the immediate question remains whether the prospect of further military action will bring both sides closer to negotiations or prolong a conflict already carrying substantial economic consequences.
