United States President Donald Trump says he plans to create a new AI force and appoint an artificial intelligence adviser, reopening questions about how his administration intends to oversee the fast-growing technology sector.
The Trump AI force was announced in a post on Truth Social, but the President offered no details about its structure, legal authority, budget or launch date. The White House also did not immediately provide clarification.
If implemented, the appointment would give Trump his second AI czar. Venture capitalist David Sacks previously held the position before leaving the White House role in the spring and becoming an external adviser.
Trump rejects new regulation
Trump made clear that the proposed body would not be used to slow artificial intelligence development.
“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the growth of this incredible industry,” he wrote.
He argued that misuse of AI could be handled through existing criminal and civil laws. That position puts him alongside technology executives who fear that extensive regulation could weaken American companies in their contest with China.
Safety campaigners are far less relaxed. Lawmakers and researchers have raised concerns about job displacement, cybercrime, misinformation, autonomous weapons and the possibility of advanced systems causing physical harm.
Sacks has similarly argued that AI developers should be responsible for product safety and face liability when failures occur, without a new layer of federal rules.
China competition shapes debate
The announcement comes as Washington and Beijing compete for leadership in artificial intelligence, a field both governments regard as central to economic and military power.
Trump is expected to discuss wider strategic issues with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Senior officials from both countries are also engaging on AI security, trade and economic relations.
For now, the AI force remains an idea rather than a defined federal institution. The missing details will matter.
