The diplomatic mission in the United States has forcefully shut down swirling social media rumors attempting to drag Ambassador Victor Emmanuel Smith into the fallout from the recent forensic audit of the Embassy in Washington.
Officials at the Embassy of Ghana in Washington are pushing back against what they describe as a deliberate smear campaign.
The controversy gained significant traction online after former British High Commissioner to Ghana Jon Benjamin claimed on social media that the administrative misconduct currently under investigation peaked during the watch of the current Ambassador.
The Embassy is simply not having it. Authorities have dismissed the assertions of the former British envoy as entirely baseless.
Timing Tells the Real Story
The defense of the Ambassador comes down to a simple timeline. Victor Smith took up his post in Washington in September 2025. That date falls completely outside the period covered by the investigative review.
The mission issued a blunt correction to the public narrative, stating that the Ambassador neither exercised responsibility for nor had oversight of the activities under examination.
Months before Smith even unpacked his bags in the American capital, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration had already recognized deeply entrenched administrative failures at the mission.
In June 2025, Accra dispatched a fresh team of Foreign Service officers with explicit instructions to fix internal systems ahead of the arrival of the new Ambassador.
A Track Record of Discipline
Diplomatic insiders point out that cleaning up administrative mess is exactly what Smith is known for. He brought the same uncompromising institutional discipline to his previous posting as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland between 2014 and 2017.
He stepped into that London office right after sweeping administrative reforms were introduced and provided firm leadership in ensuring strict adherence to the new rules.
Since arriving in Washington, he has driven a similar agenda centered on accountability, transparency and better consular service delivery.
The Embassy made it clear that while Smith welcomes public scrutiny and respects free expression, he draws a hard line at character assassination. The diplomatic statement warned that such cherished liberties must never become instruments for maligning the character and reputation of others through conjecture, innuendo or unsubstantiated allegations.
The Ambassador remains squarely focused on his mandate to serve the republic with absolute diligence and the highest standards of integrity.
