Wontumi Exim Bank Case: Plea Deal Fails as Court Orders Trial Preparations

The Wontumi Exim Bank case will proceed to trial after no plea agreement was reached between Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and the Attorney General.

The development was announced in court after the parties were previously granted additional time to negotiate a plea deal proposed by the accused.

With the negotiations unsuccessful, the court has directed the prosecution to file its disclosures within 14 days to pave the way for the trial.

A Case Management Conference has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.

The court’s latest decision effectively ends the immediate prospect of resolving the case through a plea agreement, shifting attention to the prosecution’s disclosures and subsequent trial proceedings.

Four charges

Boasiako, who is currently in custody, is facing the case alongside two other accused persons.

They have been charged with four offences: defrauding by false pretences, uttering a forged document, money laundering and intentionally causing financial loss to a public body.

The charges relate to an alleged financial loss of GH¢30 million.

The case, formally titled Republic v Bernard Antwi Boasiako aka Chairman Wontumi & 2 Ors, is linked to an Exim Bank loan.

The prosecution’s disclosures are now expected to provide further details of the evidence it intends to rely on as the case moves toward trial.
