Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has called on the Nigerian government to investigate alleged attacks on Sam Jonah properties in Nigeria, warning that unresolved concerns involving foreign investments could weaken confidence between the two countries.
Mr Ablakwa raised the matter when he received the letters of credence of Nigeria’s High Commissioner designate to Ghana, Shehu Ilu Barde.
The meeting focused on strengthening Ghana Nigeria relations, but the concerns surrounding Sir Sam Jonah’s Mobus Properties featured prominently.
Minister Seeks Protection for Investments
According to Mr Ablakwa, the protection of businesses operating across national borders is essential to maintaining investor confidence and deepening economic cooperation.
He asked the incoming Nigerian envoy to examine the reported incidents and engage the relevant authorities over the condition and security of the properties.
Mr Barde assured the minister that he would look into the allegations and consult the appropriate institutions and stakeholders in Nigeria.
The response offers an initial diplomatic path for addressing the concerns, although no details were provided about the nature or extent of the alleged attacks.
Ghana and Nigeria Discuss Trade Barriers
The two officials also discussed ways to expand trade between Ghana and Nigeria under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
Mr Ablakwa called for the removal of barriers that continue to restrict the movement of goods and services between the two West African economies.
He argued that stronger bilateral trade would create opportunities for businesses, investors and workers in both countries.
The Foreign Affairs Minister also urged Nigeria and other members of the Economic Community of West African States to build confidence in the proposed ECO single currency.
He described the currency project as an important step towards deeper regional trade and economic integration.
Mr Barde thanked the Ghanaian government for its reception and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding diplomatic and economic relationship with Ghana.
The discussion placed investment protection alongside trade and regional integration, a reminder that strong relations between the two countries depend on more than political goodwill. Businesses also need confidence that their assets will be protected.
