President John Dramani Mahama’s flagship Accra-Kumasi Expressway project has reached a major milestone, with about 51 kilometres of the proposed corridor already cleared, according to Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson.

The Finance Minister disclosed the progress in a Facebook post on Thursday, May 28, 2026, praising the Ghana Armed Forces for what he described as “phenomenal work” on the transformational road project.

“An update on the phenomenal work being undertaken by the Ghana Armed Forces on President Mahama’s transformational Accra-Kumasi Expressway project. So far, about 51km of the entire stretch has been successfully cleared.” - Dr Forson

The military is currently leading the initial phase of the project under the direction of President Mahama as government pushes ahead with one of its most ambitious transport infrastructure programmes.

Compensation for Affected Residents

Dr Forson also announced that compensation payments for residents affected by the project would commence in June after ongoing assessments by relevant state agencies are completed.

“In June, following assessments by the relevant state agencies, the Ghana Armed Forces will commence the payment of compensation to affected citizens,” he explained.

The planned compensation exercise is expected to address concerns from residents and property owners along sections of the proposed corridor who may be impacted by the road expansion works.

Government has described the Accra-Kumasi Expressway as a strategic economic corridor expected to improve connectivity between Ghana’s two largest cities while easing transportation challenges and reducing travel time.

Dr Forson said the project would play a key role in driving national development and boosting trade activities along one of the country’s busiest transport routes.

“Steadily, deliberately, and with remarkable professionalism, the foundation is being laid for what will become one of Ghana’s most strategic and economically transformative corridors.” - Dr Forson

The Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to strengthen movement of goods and services, support regional commerce and improve road transport efficiency as Ghana continues efforts to modernise critical national infrastructure.
