Apple Inc. has announced a major leadership transition, confirming that Tim Cook will step into the role of executive chairman while John Ternus becomes the company’s next chief executive officer from September 1, 2026.
The move, unanimously approved by the board, follows what the company described as a long-term succession plan aimed at ensuring continuity and stability. Cook will remain CEO through the summer, working closely with Ternus to ensure a smooth handover.
Cook, who has led Apple since 2011, described his tenure as the “greatest privilege” of his life, highlighting the company’s culture of innovation and impact.
“I love Apple with all of my being… and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with a team… dedicated to enriching the lives of our customers.” - Tim Cook
He expressed strong confidence in his successor, noting that Ternus possesses “the mind of an engineer” and “the heart to lead with integrity,” adding that he is “without question the right person to lead Apple into the future.”
Ternus Pledges Continuity and Innovation
Ternus, who has spent more than two decades at Apple, said he was “profoundly grateful” for the opportunity to lead the company. Having worked under Steve Jobs and mentored by Cook, he pledged to uphold the company’s core values.
“I am humbled to step into this role, and I promise to lead with the values and vision that have come to define this special place,” he said, expressing optimism about Apple’s future.
As part of the transition, Arthur Levinson will move from non-executive chairman to lead independent director, while Ternus joins the board.
Levinson praised Cook’s leadership, saying it had transformed Apple into “the world’s best company,” and endorsed Ternus as the ideal successor, citing his technical expertise and commitment to product excellence.
Cook’s tenure has been marked by remarkable growth. Under his leadership, Apple’s market value surged from about $350 billion to $4 trillion, while annual revenue nearly quadrupled.
The company expanded into new product categories such as Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro, while its services division grew into a business exceeding $100 billion. Apple also broadened its global presence to more than 200 countries and territories.
Cook championed key values including privacy, sustainability, and accessibility, overseeing a significant reduction in Apple’s carbon footprint and strengthening its commitment to user security.
Ternus and the Future of Apple
Ternus has played a central role in Apple’s hardware innovation, overseeing developments across major product lines including iPhone, Mac, and iPad. His leadership has also driven advances in product durability, materials engineering, and environmental sustainability.
His work has contributed to major product launches, including new iPhone models and innovations in wearable technology, reinforcing Apple’s position at the forefront of consumer electronics.
As Apple prepares for its next chapter, the leadership transition signals a blend of continuity and renewal, with the company aiming to build on its legacy while navigating an increasingly competitive global technology landscape.
