An Asiedu Nketiah presidential bid remains possible after the National Democratic Congress Chairman refused to shut the door on contesting the party’s flagbearership ahead of the 2028 general election.
Speaking on PM Express, the veteran politician said he had not settled publicly on his next move and would announce any decision only when he considers the timing right. His answer did little to quiet the question. That appeared to be the point.
Asiedu Nketiah defended political ambition, calling it a necessary quality for anyone seeking to remain relevant in public life.
“Ambition is a very useful thing in politics,” he said, arguing that politicians without it may have chosen the wrong profession. He was careful, though, to separate ambition from an immediate declaration.
In his telling, political intentions cannot remain concealed once campaigning begins. Until then, he sees no reason to announce a choice simply because speculation has intensified. The NDC chairman said he would speak clearly when his moment arrives. For now, the waiting continues.
Thank you tour stirs 2028 talk
Questions about his future have followed his nationwide thank you tour, which some party figures and political observers have read as possible groundwork for a presidential contest.
Asiedu Nketiah has pushed back against that interpretation. The tour has been presented as an effort to appreciate supporters and organisers following the NDC’s 2024 electoral victory, a position also advanced publicly by his allies.
Still, travelling across the country, meeting party members and commanding attention inevitably carries political meaning in Ghana. His latest remarks will hardly end the chatter.
Rather than narrow the discussion to the presidency, Asiedu Nketiah listed a surprisingly broad menu of possibilities.
He could remain national chairman, seek the national organiser position, return as general secretary, contest a parliamentary seat or pursue the NDC presidential nomination.
He even mentioned the prospect of contesting against current General Secretary Fifi Kwetey, whom he described as a friend.
The point was blunt. No office has been excluded merely because he currently chairs the party. “I’m not ruling any position out,” he said.
No campaign declaration yet
The distinction matters. Asiedu Nketiah has not declared for the NDC flagbearer race, announced a campaign team or offered a presidential programme. What he has done is preserve room to move.
Pressed on whether he was deliberately keeping people guessing, he treated uncertainty as part of political strategy. That response may please supporters waiting for a signal and frustrate rivals seeking clarity.
For now, the NDC chairman remains central to the 2028 conversation but bound by no public commitment. He has not entered the race. He has simply declined to close the door.
