Chelsea F.C. have announced the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the new manager of the club’s men’s team, with the Spaniard set to officially begin work on July 1, 2026.
The former midfielder has signed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge, ending months of speculation surrounding Chelsea’s managerial future and signalling the club’s intention to begin a new long-term project under one of Europe’s most highly rated young coaches.
Chelsea described Alonso as “one of the most respected figures in the modern game,” citing his coaching achievements, leadership qualities and football philosophy as central to the decision.
Alonso arrives with growing managerial reputation
Alonso joins Chelsea after successful coaching spells with Real Madrid and Bayer 04 Leverkusen, where he earned widespread praise for his tactical approach and squad development.
His reputation rose significantly after guiding Bayer Leverkusen to the first Bundesliga title in the club’s history, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most sought-after managers.
Chelsea said the appointment reflects confidence in Alonso’s “coaching quality and game model” as well as his integrity and ability to lead the next phase of the club’s development.
The club added that Alonso is viewed not only as a top-level coach but also as a “proven leader and partner” capable of helping build a sustainable winning culture.
‘We want to fight for trophies’
Speaking after the announcement, Alonso expressed pride at joining one of world football’s biggest clubs and outlined his ambitions for success at Stamford Bridge.
“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” he said.
The Spaniard revealed that discussions with Chelsea’s ownership and sporting leadership convinced him the club shares his long-term vision.
“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.” - Alonso
He also pointed to the quality within Chelsea’s squad and the broader potential of the club as key factors behind his decision to take the role.
“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it,” he added.
New era begins at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea said the club is entering the next phase of its project with confidence and determination to restore sustained success.
The appointment comes as the London club seeks stability and silverware after several transitional seasons marked by managerial changes and inconsistent performances.
With Alonso now tasked with reshaping the squad and rebuilding Chelsea’s competitive identity, attention will quickly turn to preparations for the 2026/27 campaign and whether the former midfield star can translate his early managerial success into trophies in the Premier League.
