COCOBOD Denies GH¢12m Black Stars Sponsorship Claims

The COCOBOD Black Stars sponsorship controversy has been dismissed by the Ghana Cocoa Board, which has strongly denied claims that it donated GH¢12 million to support the national football team.

In an official public notice, the Board described the allegations as “false, misleading, and without any factual basis,” insisting that no such financial support was provided.

The statement comes amid growing public concern over the use of public funds and speculation that resources meant for cocoa farmers had been redirected to national activities.

COCOBOD moved quickly to clarify its position, stating that it has neither sponsored the Black Stars nor diverted any farmer-related funds for that purpose.

“At no point has COCOBOD diverted funds meant for farmer payments to support the Black Stars,” the notice emphasised, adding that the claims circulating on various platforms do not reflect the Board’s operations or financial decisions.

Farmer Welfare Remains Top Priority

COCOBOD reaffirmed that its primary responsibility remains the welfare and productivity of Ghana’s cocoa farmers.

The Board stressed that all its financial commitments are directed toward core sector activities, including prompt payment for cocoa purchases, the supply of inputs such as fertilisers and seedlings, and the provision of extension services to improve yields.

According to the statement, sustained investment in the cocoa sector remains critical to protecting farmer incomes and maintaining Ghana’s position as one of the world’s leading cocoa producers.

The Board assured stakeholders that resources allocated for farmer support are protected and used strictly for their intended purposes.

Public Urged to Verify Information

In response to the circulating claims, COCOBOD urged the public to rely only on its official communication channels for accurate and verified information.

The Board cautioned that misinformation could create unnecessary anxiety among farmers and undermine confidence in the cocoa sector.

The clarification comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over public spending and institutional accountability, with stakeholders demanding greater transparency in the management of sector funds.

By addressing the issue directly, COCOBOD said it aims to reassure cocoa farmers and industry players that their interests remain paramount.

The Board concluded that it remains fully committed to its mandate and will continue to prioritise policies and programmes that strengthen farmer livelihoods and ensure the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s cocoa industry.
