The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has confirmed its attempted arrest of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, saying the lawmaker failed to honour two invitations to assist with an ongoing investigation.
In a statement dated Wednesday, September 23, 2026, EOCO said its officers approached the MP at the Accra High Court as part of efforts to secure his attendance for questioning.
The operation ended in a confrontation captured on video, with Mr Baffour Awuah leaving the court premises in his vehicle.
EOCO said its officers decided against further action at the scene because they believed it could endanger public safety.
EOCO Says February Invitations Were Ignored
According to the Office, the MP was invited twice in February 2026 but did not honour either invitation.
“Membership of Parliament does not, by itself, bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law,” EOCO stated.
The agency maintained that the attempted arrest formed part of steps taken to secure the lawmaker’s attendance in accordance with the law.
It did not disclose the specific subject of the investigation in its statement.
Earlier reports linked the confrontation to investigations surrounding the Ghana Jollof TikTok account. Mr Baffour Awuah had been at the High Court representing detained nurse Salomey Baffoe Awiti during proceedings on her bail application.
Two Others Under EOCO Scrutiny
EOCO said it had identified two people who allegedly intervened during the attempted arrest and helped the MP leave the scene.
Their conduct is being assessed using available video evidence, the Office said, adding that it would determine whether further action is warranted.
Mr Baffour Awuah, meanwhile, has disputed the circumstances of the attempted arrest. Speaking after the incident, he said the officer who approached him did not adequately establish her identity or produce an arrest warrant, leading him to fear for his safety.
Parliamentary Privileges Will Be Respected
EOCO also said it was aware that the MP had proceeded to Parliament after leaving the court, although the House was on recess.
The Office acknowledged the constitutional privileges and immunities available to lawmakers and pledged to respect them in subsequent operations.
It insisted, however, that parliamentary membership does not prevent a criminal investigation from continuing.
EOCO said it would review the confrontation and determine its next steps, while maintaining that the investigation involving Mr Baffour Awuah remains active.
