The Economic and Organised Crime Office has granted Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah GH¢50 million bail with three sureties as investigations into alleged financial offences involving SIC Life Savings and Loans continue.
Mr Baffour Awuah voluntarily reported to EOCO at about 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, following an arrest warrant issued by the Accra High Court.
EOCO had told the court that attempts to secure his attendance for questioning had not produced the required outcome. He was subsequently arrested after reporting to the agency and assisting investigators with the ongoing probe.
The investigation concerns allegations including criminal conspiracy, financial loss linked to SIC Life Savings and Loans, money laundering and tax-related offences.
No court has determined criminal liability in the matter.
Mr Baffour Awuah has disputed aspects of EOCO’s account, including the suggestion that he deliberately avoided invitations from the agency. His side maintains that earlier correspondence had been referred through Parliament.
EOCO has urged the public to avoid premature conclusions while investigators examine the evidence.
Afenyo Markin Questions EOCO’s Priorities
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin has meanwhile criticised the handling of the investigation and challenged EOCO to intensify efforts against financiers and organisers of Ghana-linked narcotics trafficking.
“EOCO must pursue the kingpins, not persecute political opponents,” the Effutu MP said in a statement on Thursday.
He accused EOCO of showing greater urgency in cases involving opposition figures than in pursuing major drug trafficking networks, an allegation made by the Minority Leader and not established as fact.
Mr Afenyo Markin called for stronger collaboration between EOCO and the Narcotics Control Commission to trace money and assets connected to drug trafficking operations.
EOCO’s investigation involving Mr Baffour Awuah remains active.
