Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams has disclosed that Ghana will receive $2.5 million from FIFA to support the Black Stars’ preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the country’s qualification for the global tournament.
Speaking in an interview, the Minister explained that FIFA provides financial assistance to all participating nations, with part of the allocation released before the competition to help teams prepare adequately for the event.
According to him, the advance funding is intended to cover essential preparatory activities, including training camps, international friendly matches, player travel arrangements, and other logistical requirements ahead of the tournament.
The Minister stressed that the funds would be managed responsibly and accounted for by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), emphasizing the importance of transparency in the use of public and international sporting resources.
“Of course it will be accounted for and that is one thing I haven’t hidden away from the FA, that every pesewa they are utilising they must make sure proper records are kept,” he said.
More Financial Rewards Available Through Progression
Mr. Adams noted that FIFA’s financial support does not end with the initial disbursement. He explained that countries receive additional payments based on their progress during the tournament, with prize money increasing at each stage of the competition.
He expressed optimism about Ghana’s prospects and said a strong performance by the Black Stars could significantly boost the country’s earnings from the tournament.
The Minister added that the national team is expected to travel with a 26-man squad, although the final selection remains the responsibility of the technical team and has not yet been announced.
On player compensation, Mr. Adams confirmed that government has decided to maintain the existing structure for appearance fees and daily allowances.
“We are keeping to the very conditions that they have operated in since I think 2014. The appearance fee remains the same. The per diem remains the same,” he stated.
He explained that any future review of player benefits would require consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure consensus and fairness.
The announcement provides clarity on the financial framework supporting the Black Stars as preparations intensify for Ghana’s return to football’s biggest stage in 2026.
