Ghana is participating in the Ghana Commission on the Status of Women discussions at the United Nations Headquarters in New York as the country joins global leaders to advance gender equality and the rights of women and girls.
The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, is leading Ghana’s delegation to the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), which runs from March 9 to March 19, 2026.
The Commission on the Status of Women is the United Nations’ principal global intergovernmental body dedicated to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women. The annual gathering brings together representatives of member states, United Nations agencies and civil society groups to review progress and chart strategies for advancing women’s rights globally.
Global focus on justice for women and girls
This year’s session is focusing on the theme of ensuring and strengthening access to justice for women and girls worldwide.
The priority theme for CSW70 is centered on promoting inclusive and equitable legal systems while eliminating discriminatory laws, policies and practices that limit opportunities for women and girls.
The discussions are also expected to address structural barriers that hinder women’s access to justice and equal participation in society.
Through the meeting, participants will review global progress, examine emerging challenges and strengthen commitments toward gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Ghana to present national progress and experiences
Ghana’s delegation to the international forum includes technical officials from several ministries, Members of Parliament, representatives from the Office of the President, academics and representatives from non-governmental organizations and civil society groups working in the field of gender equality and social protection.
As part of the country’s participation, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey will deliver three official statements on behalf of Ghana during key engagements at the session.
These include contributions during the Opening Dialogue Segment, a Ministerial Roundtable Discussion and a High-Level Meeting.
The engagements are expected to provide Ghana with a platform to highlight its progress in advancing gender equality and strengthening protections for women and children.
They will also offer an opportunity for the country to share national experiences and exchange ideas with other participating countries on policies that promote women’s empowerment.
Commitment to gender equality and social protection
Ghana’s participation at CSW70 underscores the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening gender equality and expanding social protection systems for vulnerable populations.
Officials say the discussions will also support national efforts aimed at protecting the rights of women and children while promoting policies that enhance their social and economic wellbeing.
The government believes participation in the global forum will further reinforce Ghana’s role in advancing gender justice and inclusive development both locally and internationally.
