Ghana has recorded 1,038 Mpox cases in Ghana with eight deaths since the outbreak began in May 2025, according to the Ministry of Health.

The disease has now spread to 124 districts across all regions of the country, with the Greater Accra and Western Regions reporting the highest number of infections. Despite the widespread distribution, health authorities say the situation remains largely under control, with only one patient currently on admission and no critical cases reported.

Speaking in Parliament on Monday, March 9, 2026, Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh provided an update on the outbreak and outlined government measures aimed at containing the disease and protecting public health.

Mr. Akandoh said the Ministry of Health, through the Ghana Health Service and with support from international partners, has activated a coordinated national response to limit the spread of the virus.

“Since the outbreak began in May 2025, 880 cases had been confirmed by November 25, 2025.

"As of March 3, 2026, Ghana has recorded 1,038 confirmed cases and eight deaths, largely among persons with underlying health conditions.” - Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh

According to the Minister, the outbreak has now affected nearly half of the country’s districts, representing about 47.5 percent of all districts nationwide.

Vaccination campaign boosts containment efforts

As part of efforts to curb transmission, Ghana has received 33,600 Mpox vaccine doses through support from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The vaccination campaign has so far covered 31,231 people across 12 districts in the Ashanti, Greater Accra and Western Regions. Health authorities say this represents more than 95 percent of the targeted population in those areas.

Mr. Akandoh also assured the public that the government is covering the full cost of medical treatment for all Mpox patients to reduce the financial burden on affected individuals.

He noted that the interventions introduced by the government are designed to protect public health while ensuring that response measures remain accessible and effective for all communities.
