Ghana to Establish 250 Farm Service Centres to Boost Agricultural Production

The government has announced plans to establish more than 250 Ghana Farm Service Centres across the country within the next four years as part of efforts to support farmers and enhance agricultural productivity.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture John Dumelo disclosed the initiative during a discussion on Ghana’s food sovereignty 69 years after independence, explaining that the centres will function as key support hubs providing farmers with mechanisation services, agricultural chemicals, subsidies and other essential resources.

According to Mr. Dumelo, the nationwide programme is designed to address longstanding challenges faced by farmers in accessing the inputs and services needed to improve productivity.

“The goal for the Farm Service Centre is that, at the end of the four years, we would have established over 250 farm service centres across the country.” - Deputy Minister of Agriculture John Dumelo

First phase of centres to begin this year

Mr. Dumelo indicated that the rollout of the programme will begin with an initial phase expected to see at least 12 centres completed by the end of 2026.

He explained that construction activities will commence soon, with groundbreaking ceremonies scheduled in several locations across the country. “This year alone, we will cut the sod for almost eleven or twelve Farm Service Centres,” he stated.

The Deputy Minister further revealed that the first project under the initiative will begin in the Afram Plains area of the Eastern Region.

“Next week or next two weeks, the president is cutting sod for Farm Service Centre in the Afram Plains,” he added.

Boosting food production and security

Mr. Dumelo emphasized that the establishment of the centres forms part of broader government efforts to strengthen Ghana’s agricultural sector and improve domestic food production.

By providing farmers with easier access to modern farming equipment, agricultural inputs and technical support, the initiative is expected to enhance productivity and build resilience within the country’s food systems.

He noted that the programme is also aligned with the government’s wider food security agenda, which seeks to increase local production while reducing dependence on imported food products.
