The Ghana Gold Board has thrown its support behind the 2026 observance of World Kidney Day, reaffirming its commitment to responsible mining and the sustainable management of Ghana’s natural resources.

The programme was officially launched on March 10, 2026, at Burma Hall in Burma Camp by the Ghana Armed Forces Health Services.

The event brought together government officials, medical professionals, and institutional partners to raise awareness about kidney health and environmental protection.

Observed under the theme “Kidney Health for All: Caring for People, Protecting the Planet,” the launch marks the start of a month-long series of health outreach activities organised by the Ghana Armed Forces.

These activities include screening for diabetes and hypertension, public education on kidney health, and awareness campaigns aimed at promoting early detection and prevention of kidney-related diseases.

Government calls for stronger health support systems

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, who served as the guest of honour, emphasised the importance of strengthening support systems for patients suffering from kidney diseases.

He urged citizens to prioritise preventive healthcare and regular medical screening.

The minister also commended John Dramani Mahama for introducing the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as “Mahama Cares,” which is designed to assist patients facing critical illnesses, including kidney conditions.

According to him, while government initiatives are important, partnerships with private institutions remain essential, particularly as Ghana faces a shortage of dialysis machines needed for treatment.

Gold Board highlights responsible mining efforts

Representing the Ghana Gold Board, Deputy Director for Responsible Mining James German highlighted the organisation’s role in promoting responsible mining and protecting the environment within Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale mining sector.

He explained that beyond its core mandate, the board is also supporting the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in efforts to formalise the artisanal and small-scale mining industry.

According to him, this responsibility led to the creation of a dedicated Directorate for Responsible Mining and Sustainability.

Mr German added that the board remains committed to initiatives that promote environmental protection, noting that supporting World Kidney Day aligns with its broader environmental and public health objectives.

Partnership for Sustainable Development

The launch event attracted several high-level dignitaries, including the Deputy Ministers for Lands and Natural Resources and Defence, as well as the Chief of Defence Staff.

Institutions such as the 37 Military Hospital and the National Petroleum Authority also partnered to support the initiative.

Officials say the Ghana Gold Board’s involvement reflects its broader commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in Ghana’s mining sector, particularly through responsible sourcing, environmental protection, and improved public health outcomes.
