President John Dramani Mahama has outlined his vision for Ghana’s future, stressing that democracy must produce real economic and social benefits for citizens.
Speaking at Yonsei University, where he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree in Public Administration, the President said his leadership vision is centred on building a prosperous and self-reliant Ghana.
“My vision for Ghana is clear. To prove that democracy works,” he said during his lecture. “To create a prosperous, self-reliant nation where every citizen can realize their full potential.”
According to him, democracy should not be limited to elections but must translate into improved livelihoods and expanded opportunities for citizens, particularly the youth.

Africa’s demographic and economic potential

President Mahama emphasised Africa’s growing demographic importance, noting that the continent will play a significant role in shaping the global economy in the coming decades.
By 2050, he said, Africa is expected to account for roughly one-quarter of the world’s population, while one-third of the world’s youth aged between 15 and 24 will come from the continent.
“This young population is a source of energy, creativity, and innovation.
“These are entrepreneurs, scientists, artists, engineers, and leaders ready to seize the opportunity to thrive.” - President John Dramani Mahama
He encouraged greater investment and collaboration between Africa and Asia, particularly in sectors such as education, digital technology, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and advanced manufacturing.
Concluding his address, President Mahama stressed that governance and economic development must work together to empower citizens and expand opportunities.
“Democracy is not just about elections.
“It is about creating opportunities, improving livelihoods, and ensuring that our citizens are empowered to build the future they deserve.” - President John Dramani Mahama
He added that Ghana’s development agenda will continue to focus on youth empowerment, innovation, cultural pride, and international partnerships aimed at delivering inclusive prosperity for all Ghanaians.
