Ghana’s liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage capacity is expected to increase to 40,000 metric tons following new infrastructure investments aimed at strengthening the country’s downstream petroleum sector.

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, disclosed this while speaking at the commissioning of a new LPG vessel in South Korea.

According to him, the deployment of the vessel alongside a 6,000 metric ton LPG storage facility in Accra will significantly expand the country’s storage capacity and improve long-term supply security.

“Once we deploy this facility and the 6,000 metric tons storage facility in Accra, it will increase the overall LPG storage facility in Ghana to 40,000 metric tons, and that provides a significant buffer for the future.” - Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, Chief Executive Officer of NPA

Mr. Tameklo praised Sahara Energy for investing in critical petroleum infrastructure, describing the project as a major boost to Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry.

Supporting Ghana’s green energy transition

The NPA CEO also linked the investment to Ghana’s broader energy policy under President John Dramani Mahama,

“When His Excellency the President assumed office on the 7th of January 2025, he decided to rename the Ministry of Energy to the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition,” he said, explaining that the move underscores the country’s determination to pursue a greener energy future.

According to Mr. Tameklo, the policy shift reflects the government’s commitment to cleaner energy solutions and sustainable fuel supply systems.

He noted that Sahara Energy had already anticipated the need for such investments by expanding infrastructure within Ghana’s petroleum sector.

Sahara Energy commended for support

Mr. Tameklo further commended Sahara Group for its consistent support to Ghana’s energy sector, recalling its intervention during a recent supply challenge involving Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK).

“There have been many instances where Sahara has always come in to help this country,” he said, explaining that the company stepped in at a critical time to prevent supply disruptions.

He added that the intervention helped Ghana avoid losing key aviation business to neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire, demonstrating the strategic value of private sector partnerships.

The NPA boss expressed appreciation to Sahara Group’s leadership, including its Managing Director, for their continued commitment to Ghana’s energy development.

On behalf of the National Petroleum Authority and the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Mr. Tameklo said the investment represents an important step toward improving Ghana’s energy security and strengthening the resilience of the downstream petroleum sector.
