Ghana Repatriates 327 Nationals Stranded in Côte d’Ivoire After Demolition Exercise

The Government of Ghana has commenced the repatriation of 327 Ghanaian nationals stranded in Côte d’Ivoire following a demolition exercise carried out by authorities in the Port Bouët Municipality of Abidjan.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, June 12, the affected individuals were displaced after the demolition operation destroyed homes and disrupted livelihoods in the communities where they had been residing.

The Ministry disclosed that 228 Ghanaian nationals have already been successfully repatriated and arrived in Ghana on Thursday, June 11.

Authorities have also completed arrangements for the remaining 99 affected persons to return home on Friday, June 12, as part of efforts to ensure the safe return of all stranded citizens.

The government said the repatriation exercise forms part of its commitment to providing immediate support to Ghanaians facing hardship abroad and helping them reintegrate into society upon their return.

Government Pursues Compensation

Beyond the evacuation effort, Ghana is engaging with Ivorian authorities to secure compensation for victims affected by the demolition exercise.

According to the Ministry, all 327 Ghanaians were living in areas impacted by the operation and were left without shelter, income and the financial means to secure alternative accommodation.

“The Ministry further wishes to acknowledge that Ivorian authorities have expressed their desire to compensate the victims of their demolition exercise and shall therefore remain actively engaged on the matter to ensure that the promised compensation is received by our affected nationals.” - Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Ministry added that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Abidjan will continue to coordinate with relevant authorities and stakeholders to facilitate the compensation process.

Diplomatic Engagement Continues

Government officials say they remain committed to protecting the welfare of Ghanaian citizens abroad and ensuring that those affected receive the necessary assistance.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry emphasized that ongoing diplomatic engagement with Côte d’Ivoire will focus on addressing outstanding concerns, securing compensation for victims and supporting the long-term welfare of the affected nationals.

The repatriation exercise highlights Ghana’s efforts to respond swiftly to the needs of citizens facing emergencies outside the country while strengthening cooperation with neighbouring states on humanitarian matters.
