Ghana and South Korea have taken a new step toward deepening diplomatic and economic relations following bilateral talks between President John Dramani Mahama and the President of the Republic of Korea, Lee Jae Myung.

The meeting resulted in the signing of Ghana South Korea cooperation agreements covering maritime security, climate change cooperation and digital technology. The agreements are expected to enhance collaboration between the two countries across strategic sectors.

President Mahama described the discussions as a reflection of the long-standing partnership between Ghana and South Korea, emphasising the strong diplomatic ties built over decades.

According to President Mahama, Ghana and South Korea continue to enjoy a relationship grounded in shared democratic values and a commitment to human rights.

He noted that the two countries have often worked closely together in international institutions such as the United Nations, where they frequently align on key global issues.

The President highlighted that the partnership between both nations has been strengthened by mutual respect and cooperation on matters of international development and governance.

These shared values, he explained, have helped Ghana and South Korea build a relationship that extends beyond diplomacy into practical cooperation that supports national development goals.

Expanding cooperation in agriculture

President Mahama also highlighted growing collaboration between the two countries in the area of agriculture and agribusiness.

He pointed to development initiatives supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), which focus on improving rice production and strengthening Ghana’s food security.

These projects aim to enhance agricultural productivity through modern farming techniques and technological support, helping Ghana improve domestic food supply while creating economic opportunities for farmers.

The President said such partnerships demonstrate the potential for technology-driven cooperation that supports Ghana’s broader agricultural transformation agenda.

Economic opportunities through AfCFTA

The Ghanaian leader also emphasised opportunities for expanded economic engagement between Ghana and South Korea through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

With the AfCFTA Secretariat based in Accra, Ghana is increasingly positioning itself as a gateway for businesses seeking access to Africa’s growing market.

President Mahama noted that the trade agreement provides an opportunity for Korean companies to invest in manufacturing and export-oriented industries within Ghana.

He expressed confidence that Ghana’s natural resources and skilled workforce, combined with Korea’s advanced technology and innovation capacity, will continue to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

According to him, the partnership between the two countries has the potential to promote sustainable development, deepen economic integration and create shared prosperity for both nations.
