Ghana Stock Exchange Composite Index Crosses 15,100 Despite Lower Trading Activity

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) continued its record-breaking run on Wednesday, with the benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) climbing above the 15,100-point mark even as trading activity slowed sharply from the previous session.

It was a quieter day on the trading floor. Fewer shares changed hands, fewer cedis were exchanged, yet the market still edged higher. That combination suggests investors are becoming more selective rather than stepping away from equities altogether.

The benchmark index rose by 39.48 points, representing a 0.26 per cent gain, to close at 15,118.75 points, extending one of the strongest rallies seen on the local bourse in recent years.

Trading Volumes Retreat

Data released by the Ghana Stock Exchange showed that 1,689,558 shares were traded during the session, with a total market value of GH¢5.81 million.

Compared with the previous trading day, activity slowed considerably. Trading volume fell by 56 per cent, while market turnover dropped by 70 per cent.

The decline comes after several sessions of heightened activity and may reflect investors taking a more measured approach while holding on to stocks that have delivered strong returns in recent months.

Hords Leads Market Gainers

Despite the slowdown, several equities recorded notable price appreciation.

Hords Limited emerged as the session's best performer after its share price jumped 15.79 per cent to close at GH¢0.22.

Intravenous Infusions Limited followed with a 10 per cent gain, extending its recent upward momentum. Clydestone Ghana advanced 3.29 per cent, while MTN Ghana added 1.64 per cent, providing additional support for the benchmark index.

Those gains comfortably outweighed declines recorded by a handful of stocks.

ZEN Petroleum Holdings posted the day's steepest loss after falling 9.09 per cent to GH¢10.00. Kasapreko PLC, which has attracted significant investor attention since its listing, shed 3.29 per cent, while Benso Oil Palm Plantation slipped marginally by 0.01 per cent.

Although Kasapreko finished among the day's losers, it remained the most actively traded stock on the exchange.

The company recorded 693,864 shares traded, accounting for a sizeable share of total market activity.

MTN Ghana followed with 291,825 shares, while CalBank traded 241,476 shares. Ecobank Transnational Incorporated also featured prominently with 119,959 shares changing hands.

The concentration of trading in a few well-followed stocks points to continued investor preference for companies with stronger liquidity and established market presence.

Financial Index Holds Firm

Unlike the broader market, the GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) closed unchanged at 8,242.01 points.

The index has remained largely stable in recent sessions after months of robust gains. Although it has slipped 0.2 per cent over the past week, it continues to post an impressive 77.36 per cent return since the start of the year.

Meanwhile, the broader GSE Composite Index has now gained 1.76 per cent over the past week, 1.69 per cent over the last four weeks and an outstanding 72.39 per cent year to date.

The latest session sends a familiar message. Investors may be trading less frequently, but confidence in Ghana's equity market has not faded.

Instead, attention appears to be shifting towards fundamentally strong companies as market participants await the next round of corporate earnings and economic data that could determine whether the rally still has further room to run.
