Ghana Stock Exchange Extends Rally as Composite Index Climbs 74.41% in 2026

The Ghana Stock Exchange extended its strong run on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, as gains in banking, telecommunications, pharmaceutical and alternative market stocks pushed the benchmark indices higher despite moderate turnover.

The GSE Composite Index gained 70.50 points, taking its year to date return to 74.41%, while the GSE Financial Stocks Index rose 52.21 points to reach 74.85% for the year.

The session pointed to continued investor appetite, although much of the trading remained concentrated in a few counters.

MTN Ghana anchors market activity

MTN Ghana was again at the centre of trading, accounting for more than half of all shares exchanged and over three fifths of total market value.

The telecommunications company recorded 976,154 shares valued at GH¢6.87 million, representing about 53.70% of total market volume and 61.70% of the GH¢11.14 million turnover recorded during the session.

Its share price also moved higher, gaining 4 pesewas to close at GH¢7.04, up 0.57%.

Benso Oil Palm Plantation was the second largest stock by value traded, with 12,500 shares worth GH¢975,000 changing hands. Unlike MTN Ghana, however, Benso declined 2.49% to GH¢78.

Unilever Ghana generated GH¢887,684.50 in turnover, followed by GCB Bank with GH¢558,145 and Kasapreko with GH¢422,234.81.

Smaller stocks post sharp gains

The strongest price movements came from smaller counters.

DIGICUT Production and Advertising led the gainers, jumping 11.11% from GH¢0.09 to GH¢0.10. Clydestone Ghana followed with a 9.82% increase to GH¢5.37, while HORDS gained 10% to GH¢0.66.

Dannex Ayrton Starwin also climbed 8.77% to GH¢0.62.

Among financial stocks, CAL Bank rose 3.95% to GH¢0.79, Ecobank Transnational Incorporated increased 2.73% to GH¢1.88 and SIC Insurance gained 0.59% to GH¢5.12.

The spread of gains was notable. It meant the market’s rise was not being driven entirely by MTN Ghana, even though the telecom giant remained the dominant source of liquidity.

Intravenous Infusions falls sharply

Intravenous Infusions was the session’s biggest decliner, dropping 8.33% from GH¢0.48 to GH¢0.44.

The fall came alongside significant activity, with 254,788 shares worth GH¢112,169.90 changing hands. The volume represented about 14.02% of all shares traded on the day.

Kasapreko also slipped 0.50% to GH¢1.99, while Benso Oil Palm Plantation recorded the other notable decline.

Several heavyweight stocks remained unchanged. GCB Bank closed at GH¢43.10, Standard Chartered Bank Ghana at GH¢70, TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana at GH¢39.83 and Guinness Ghana Breweries at GH¢11.88.

Strong returns, concentrated liquidity

Tuesday’s performance captures the character of the GSE’s 2026 rally. Prices are rising strongly, but liquidity remains concentrated in a relatively small group of companies.

That distinction matters. A market can produce impressive index returns without having deep trading activity across its entire listed universe. Smaller counters can post double digit gains on relatively modest transactions, while investors seeking to move larger positions may still depend on a handful of liquid stocks.

MTN Ghana’s contribution makes the point clearly. Its GH¢6.87 million turnover represented most of the day’s market value, even as several smaller companies recorded much sharper percentage price gains.

Still, the overall direction remains difficult to ignore. With the Composite Index up 74.41% year to date and the Financial Stocks Index gaining 74.85%, the exchange continues to deliver one of its strongest performances in years.

The next challenge is whether the rally can broaden beyond the market’s most actively traded names. For now, investor sentiment remains firmly supportive, and the Ghana Stock Exchange continues to push higher.
