Finance Minister Files Tax Returns, Calls for Stronger Tax Compliance

Ghana tax compliance efforts received a renewed push as Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Baah Forson publicly filed his annual tax returns alongside his deputy, underscoring the importance of leadership through action.

According to the Minister, the gesture was deliberate and symbolic. “Leadership must be demonstrated, not declared,” he said, stressing the need for public officials to set the standard in fulfilling civic duties.

Dr Forson highlighted the central role taxes play in national development, describing compliance as both a legal and moral obligation.

He commended Ghanaian taxpayers for their continued contributions, noting that their efforts sustain government operations and drive progress.

“Paying taxes is a shared civic responsibility. It is the foundation of good governance and a cornerstone of national development,” he stated, adding that all citizens and institutions must remain equal before the law.

He emphasised that tax revenue directly funds critical sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and security, making compliance essential for equitable development.

Strengthening Public Engagement and Reforms

The Minister also praised the Ghana Revenue Authority for its ongoing initiatives, particularly activities marking Tax and Good Governance Month in April. He described the campaign as a vital platform for promoting awareness and encouraging voluntary compliance.

He urged the Authority to intensify public education and continue reforms aimed at simplifying tax processes, reducing compliance costs, and improving transparency.

“The Ministry of Finance stands ready to support the GRA in fully delivering on its mandate,” he affirmed.

Dr Forson encouraged individuals and businesses yet to file their returns to do so promptly, advising them to seek assistance where needed and utilise available digital platforms.

He concluded that fostering a strong tax culture is key to building a resilient economy, enhancing accountability, and ensuring a fairer society.
