Ghana Stock Exchange Rebounds Despite Weak Market Breadth

The Ghana Stock Exchange rebound gathered strength on Tuesday as gains in GCB Bank, Ecobank Ghana and MTN Ghana lifted the benchmark indices, even as selling pressure spread across most traded equities.

The GSE Composite Index gained 54.69 points to close at 14,836.37, raising its return since the beginning of 2026 to 69.17%. The GSE Financial Stocks Index climbed 53.82 points to 7,881.85, leaving its year to date gain at 69.61%.

Those numbers looked solid. The market underneath them was less convincing.

Only three stocks gained during the September 8 session, while 11 recorded losses. The positive close therefore reflected buying in a narrow group of influential companies rather than a broad improvement in investor sentiment.

The closing index figures were confirmed by the Ghana Stock Exchange.

GCB leads concentrated recovery

GCB Bank was the strongest gainer, climbing 6.17% from GH¢39.56 to GH¢42.00. The bank added GH¢2.44 to its share price, although only 4,846 shares worth about GH¢192,951 changed hands.

That relatively small turnover was enough to make a visible difference to the Financial Stocks Index.

Ecobank Ghana advanced by approximately 2.43% to GH¢39.97, supported by transactions valued at about GH¢1.05 million. MTN Ghana gained 0.44% to close at GH¢6.88.

The three advances outweighed losses elsewhere, illustrating how movements in heavily weighted stocks can pull an index higher even when most shares are falling.

Selling pressure spreads

Digicut Production and Advertising suffered the steepest decline, dropping 13.16% from GH¢0.38 to GH¢0.33. The company traded 330,683 shares during the session.

Dannex Ayrton Starwin Pharmaceuticals fell 9.17% to GH¢0.99, while Trust Bank Gambia lost 6.25% to finish at GH¢1.20.

GOIL dropped 6.04% to GH¢7.00 and Intravenous Infusions declined 5% to GH¢0.57. Republic Bank Ghana, Hords, CAL Bank and Ecobank Transnational Incorporated also closed lower.

Societe Generale Ghana and TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana recorded smaller declines.

Several large counters offered some stability. Benso Oil Palm Plantation remained unchanged at GH¢75.00, Guinness Ghana Breweries held at GH¢10.70, Unilever Ghana stayed at GH¢40.00 and Standard Chartered Bank Ghana closed at GH¢69.89.

MTN controls half of turnover

Total market activity reached 1.72 million shares valued at GH¢6.55 million.

MTN Ghana accounted for approximately GH¢3.29 million after 477,773 shares changed hands. That represented just over 50% of total traded value.

Ecobank Ghana and Kasapreko followed, with Kasapreko generating about GH¢505,889. Together, MTN Ghana, Ecobank Ghana and Kasapreko contributed close to 74% of the session’s turnover.

Volume was equally concentrated. MTN Ghana, Digicut, Kasapreko and CAL Bank generated more than three quarters of all shares traded.

Tuesday’s close keeps the GSE’s strong 2026 performance intact, but breadth remains the weak point. Three gainers against 11 decliners is not an across the board rally.

The next few sessions will show whether buying spreads to more companies or whether the recovery remains dependent on a small circle of heavyweight stocks.
