The Mahama Ayariga vetting takes centre stage in Parliament today, Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as the Majority Leader appears before the Appointments Committee following his nomination as Minister designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
President John Dramani Mahama nominated Mr Ayariga to the portfolio as part of a fresh round of appointments currently before Parliament.
He will appear alongside Dr Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings, who has been nominated as Minister designate for Environment, Science and Technology, as well as one nominee to the Supreme Court.
The proceedings are expected to test the nominees on their professional experience, policy priorities and suitability for the respective positions.
Ayariga Outlines Vetting Timetable
Interestingly, Mr Ayariga himself outlined the schedule for the vetting when Parliament met on Monday, August 24, in his capacity as Chairman of the Business Committee.
“On Tuesday, August 25, 2026, the Appointments Committee should consider the two ministerial nominees and one justice of the Supreme Court,” he told the House.
He added that two additional Supreme Court nominees are expected before the committee on Wednesday, August 26.
“So those are the schedules that the Business Committee is recommending for adoption by this House,” Mr Ayariga said.
His appearance before the committee will now place him on the other side of the parliamentary process, with members expected to question him on his vision for local government administration, decentralisation, chieftaincy matters and relations with religious bodies.
Parliament Moves Quickly on Nominations
The vetting forms part of Parliament’s special sitting, with lawmakers moving to consider presidential nominations that require parliamentary approval.
The Business Committee has also requested a waiver of the Standing Orders provision relating to the publication of presidential nominations.
The move is intended to allow the committee to proceed with the vetting timetable without waiting for the normal publication period to expire.
Once the Appointments Committee concludes its work, reports on the nominees will be submitted to the full House.
Parliament will then decide whether to approve or reject the nominations in line with its constitutional responsibilities.
For Mr Ayariga and Dr Agyeman Rawlings, today’s questioning is therefore the next major hurdle before they can assume their respective ministerial portfolios.
