Mahama Opens Ghana AgroTech Fair 2026, Pushes Innovation in Agriculture

President John Dramani Mahama has officially opened the Ghana AgroTech Fair 2026 in Accra, underscoring the critical role of innovation and technology in reshaping the country’s agricultural sector.

The event, themed “Transforming Agribusiness through Local Innovation and Technology,” has brought together stakeholders from agriculture, research, and industry to explore solutions aimed at boosting productivity and strengthening agribusiness.

Addressing participants, President Mahama said the fair represents more than a display of equipment and tools.

“Events such as this do more than just showcase machinery and technology; they connect ideas to enterprise, research to industry, and innovation to investment,” he stated, adding that such platforms are essential for transforming agriculture into a driver of national prosperity.

Call for local solutions in agriculture

The President emphasised the need for Ghana to prioritise locally developed technologies across the agricultural value chain.

He warned that overreliance on imported machinery and systems could hinder long-term transformation efforts.

“No nation can transform its agricultural economy while indefinitely depending on imported machinery, processing lines and technological systems at every stage of production.” - President John Dramani Mahama

President Mahama stressed that Ghana must build its capacity to design, adapt, and scale agricultural technologies domestically to ensure sustainable growth.

Farmer service centres to boost productivity

As part of broader efforts to modernise agriculture, the President announced plans to commence construction of farmer service centres across the country.

He revealed that the first centre will be launched at Afram Plains, marking the beginning of a nationwide initiative to establish 50 centres.

“Farmers registered with the centres will receive mechanisation support, training, and guidance from extension officers on best practices.” - President John Dramani Mahama

The first phase will cover 11 centres in key agricultural zones, aimed at improving productivity, processing, and value addition.

The Ghana AgroTech Fair 2026 is expected to serve as a vital platform for collaboration among industry players, researchers, and investors.

Officials say the event will help accelerate the adoption of modern technologies, strengthen agribusiness practices, and position agriculture as a more productive and profitable sector within Ghana’s economy.
