President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate National Cathedral Board dissolution, ending the trustees’ role in managing the stalled project.
The directive was communicated in a letter dated September 18, 2026, and signed by Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister Mahama Ayariga.
“His Excellency the President has directed the dissolution of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana Project with immediate effect,” the letter said.
The decision affects the board chaired by Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah.
Project site to be handed over
The outgoing trustees have been instructed to work with the project consultant and formally transfer the National Cathedral site to the Ministry by October 31.
According to the letter, the handover is necessary “to allow government to determine the future of the project.”
No decision has yet been announced on whether construction will continue, the site will be redesigned or the project will be abandoned entirely.
The directive places the Cathedral under direct government control once the transfer is completed.
Copies of the letter were sent to the Secretary to the President, the Chief of Staff, the Ministry’s Deputy Minister and Chief Director, as well as the Executive Director of the National Cathedral Secretariat.
Government weighs project’s future
The National Cathedral project has remained stalled despite substantial public expenditure and years of political controversy over its financing, procurement and unfinished construction.
Its future has been uncertain since President Mahama returned to office, with his administration promising to review the project before deciding what should happen to the site.
Mr Ayariga thanked the trustees on the President’s behalf for their work. “I wish to thank you for your commitment to promoting the Christian faith in the country,” he said.
The October handover will clear the way for the government’s next decision. For now, the board is gone, the structure remains unfinished and no new completion plan has been presented.
