Fire Rips Through Shops and Goods Worth Thousands of Cedis in Makola Market

A major fire outbreak has swept through sections of Makola Market in Accra, destroying several shops and merchandise worth tens of thousands of cedis.

The blaze erupted on Wednesday and rapidly spread through parts of the bustling trading centre, sending thick clouds of smoke into the sky and triggering panic among traders, shoppers, and nearby residents. Many people were forced to abandon their businesses and flee the area as firefighters rushed to the scene.

The fire has caused extensive damage to property, with large quantities of goods and valuables belonging to traders destroyed in the inferno. Although the full scale of the losses is yet to be assessed, affected traders fear the financial impact could be significant.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion as shop owners attempted to salvage their merchandise while the flames intensified across parts of the market.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) are actively battling the fire and working to prevent it from spreading to adjoining shops and structures within the densely populated commercial area.

Emergency responders remain at the scene as investigations into the cause of the fire are expected to begin once the situation is fully brought under control.

Authorities have not yet reported any casualties. Further updates are expected as officials assess the extent of the damage and the impact of the Makola Market fire on traders and businesses operating in the area.
