NPP Demands Muntaka Resignation Over Cocaine Seizures

The New Patriotic Party has demanded the resignation of the Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, arguing that repeated cocaine seizures involving consignments linked to Ghana have raised serious questions about the country’s ability to tackle international drug trafficking.

NPP Second Vice Chairman Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, said Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka should leave office over what the party describes as declining confidence in Ghana’s anti-narcotics and border security systems.

His criticism follows several drug interceptions abroad, including nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine seized by French customs at the Port of Dunkirk in September.

The drugs were found in a container carrying plastic waste from Ghana and were valued at about €225 million.

NPP questions confidence in security agencies

Nana B pointed to previous comments by Muntaka about concerns that alleged insider leaks within Ghana’s security services could discourage foreign partners from sharing sensitive intelligence.

“That alone is a vote of no confidence in Muntaka,” he argued, adding that the same concerns raised questions about the leadership of the Narcotics Control Commission and airport security.

Muntaka had warned in September that suspected involvement of security personnel in criminal activity could weaken cooperation with foreign intelligence agencies.

The NPP says the frequency and scale of seizures involving Ghana require stronger political accountability.

Dunkirk case remains under investigation

The Dunkirk shipment has already triggered criminal investigations in Ghana, with several suspects placed before the courts.

NACOC has said some suspects arrested in connection with the case allegedly facilitated the activities of an international trafficking network operating through Ghana.

Government has also taken steps to tighten narcotics controls, including restoring NACOC to joint container inspections at the ports and reviewing coordination among security agencies.

The NPP, however, insists those measures do not remove the need for accountability at the leadership level, with Nana B arguing that the Interior Minister should resign or be removed from office.
