National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has raised fresh Ghana drug trafficking allegations, claiming that the country has become a major transit point for illicit narcotics under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
Addressing a press briefing on Tuesday, September 22, Mr Boakye alleged that some officials at Ghana’s ports and airports were facilitating the movement of illegal drugs through the country.
“Our information is that our country has become a major transit point for illicit drugs, for narcotics,” he said. “And it's not by accident, but because of the complicity of officials at our port and our airports.”
NPP Alleges Existence of Drug Laboratories
Mr Boakye further claimed that international drug traffickers had established operational bases and clandestine laboratories in Ghana to process narcotics for export.
“The intelligence we have picked is that these drug lords, these traffickers, they have established bases, laboratories here for processing of illicit drugs and narcotics under the watch of President Mahama.” - Henry Nana Boakye
He linked his concerns to reports of drug seizures involving consignments traced to Ghana in Australia, France and South Africa.
“That is the reason why volumes of drugs traced to Ghana keep surfacing in the holds of ships and the luggage of passengers in Sydney, Dunkirk, and Johannesburg,” he claimed.
The NPP organiser did not publicly provide evidence establishing the existence of the alleged laboratories or identifying officials he accused of facilitating the trade.
Government Moves to Tighten Border Security
The allegations come amid ongoing investigations into narcotics trafficking through Ghana’s ports.
On September 17, the Presidency announced that 10 individuals, including four Customs officers, were being held as investigations continued.
President Mahama also directed the formation of an interagency task force to propose measures for strengthening border security and preventing drug trafficking.
