Peter Quartey Elected PIAC Chair

Economist and development finance expert Professor Peter Quartey has been elected Chairperson of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee, taking charge of the body responsible for monitoring Ghana’s petroleum revenue management.

The Peter Quartey PIAC chair tenure took effect on November 3, 2026, and will run for one year.

Prof. Quartey, who represents the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences on the committee, succeeds Richard Ellimah, whose term as Chairperson ended in October.

His election took place at a committee meeting on Tuesday after six new members were sworn into office and Prof. Quartey himself was renominated by the Academy to continue serving on PIAC.

At the same meeting, Samuel Bekoe, the representative of Think Tanks, was elected Vice Chair for a one-year term.

Six new members join PIAC

The leadership change comes with a broader reconstitution of the committee following the expiration of the terms of six members.

The new members are Mama Agumekosua V, representing the Queen Mothers Association of Ghana, and Dr Edmund Adinkra-Darko of the Trades Union Congress.

Alhaji Abdul Majeed Saeed joins the committee on behalf of Muslim Groups, while Rev Jehoiada Godwin Amuzu represents Christian Groups.

Daniel Kissi represents the Association of Ghana Industries and Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, with Kyei Kwadwo Yamoah representing Civil Society and Community Based Organisations.

The nominees were sworn in at the Ministry of Finance by Director of the Legal Division Evelyn Amerley Nuno-Amarteifio on behalf of the Finance Minister.

Quartey brings development finance experience

Prof. Quartey brings more than 22 years of experience in economics, development finance, private sector development, monetary and financial sector policy and digital finance to the position.

He holds a PhD in Development Economics from the University of Manchester and an MSc in Quantitative Development Economics from the University of Warwick. He also holds MPhil and BA degrees in Economics from the University of Ghana.

His professional background spans academic leadership, research, institutional governance and policy development.

PIAC said it “congratulates Professor Peter Quartey and Mr Samuel Bekoe on their election and wishes them success in their leadership roles.”

The committee also welcomed the six newly sworn in members, saying it expects their contributions to strengthen its work in promoting transparency and accountability in the management of Ghana’s petroleum revenues.
