Police have arrested 36 people following the Gindabour mob attack that killed General Constable Redeemer Owusu and injured other officers in the Sawla District.
The suspects remain in custody and are assisting investigations into the violence, which occurred on September 16, 2026. Police say they will be taken before court.
According to a preliminary police account, General Constable Owusu and his colleagues were conducting highway patrols along the road linking Gindabour and Kenkyen when a motorcyclist diverted into the bush after seeing their vehicle.
The officers later found the rider unconscious on a bush road. They picked him up and attempted to transport him to hospital, but he died on the way.
Mob attacks patrol team
Police said residents attacked the officers after news of the rider’s death reached the community.
General Constable Owusu was killed during the attack, while his colleagues suffered injuries of varying severity. The patrol vehicle was also damaged.
The circumstances surrounding the motorcyclist’s initial collapse and death remain under investigation.
The bodies of the rider and the police officer have been deposited at the Damongo morgue for preservation and autopsy.
Reinforcements deployed
Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno has deployed investigators and intelligence officers to the area.
Reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna and Kalba have joined the Savannah Regional Intelligence Team to maintain security and support the investigation.
“The Command highly condemns the attack on its officers and will ensure the perpetrators are made to face the full rigours of the law,” Savannah Regional Police Commander DCOP David Kamoako said.
Police have not disclosed the identities of the 36 suspects or the specific charges they are expected to face.
