The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has intensified efforts to ensure a stable and uninterrupted electricity supply across Ghana during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as football fans prepare to follow one of the world's biggest sporting events.
As part of measures to protect consumers and maintain service reliability throughout the tournament, the Commission convened a high-level strategic meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on June 9, 2026.
The engagement focused on assessing operational readiness, strengthening coordination among key stakeholders, and implementing preventive measures to minimise the risk of power disruptions during the competition.
Executive Secretary of PURC, Dr. Shafic Suleman, said the Commission has developed a strict monitoring framework aimed at ensuring quality service delivery throughout the World Cup period.
According to him, the Commission's Energy Services and Performance Monitoring Directorate and Regional Operations and Consumer Services Directorate will actively track power supply reliability and service quality nationwide.
Dr. Suleman noted that PURC has also established direct communication channels with technical personnel from ECG and GRIDCo to facilitate immediate regulatory intervention whenever emergencies arise.
In addition, the Commission has directed both utility providers to adopt a coordinated communication strategy to ensure transparency and keep consumers informed about developments affecting power supply.
ECG Deploys Emergency Response Measures
During the meeting, Acting Managing Director of ECG, Ing. Kwame Kpekpena, outlined several measures designed to maintain network stability and ensure rapid response to faults.
He disclosed that all non-essential maintenance activities would be suspended during the tournament period, with technical teams focusing exclusively on emergency fault rectification where necessary.
ECG will also deploy standby technical teams and contractors near high-demand locations across the country to facilitate swift restoration of supply in the event of outages.
The company further plans to strengthen surveillance around critical electricity infrastructure through collaboration with national security agencies while enhancing public communication to reassure consumers and provide timely updates during service interruptions.
GRIDCo Chief Executive Officer, Ing. Frank Otchere, assured stakeholders that the transmission company has undertaken extensive preparations to support uninterrupted electricity delivery.
He revealed that identified hotspots across the transmission network are being addressed while all non-critical maintenance works have been deferred.
According to him, GRIDCo has intensified vegetation management activities along transmission corridors since May to reduce the risk of tree branches interfering with power lines.
The company has also deployed personnel to man major substations around the clock and positioned area managers to respond quickly to operational challenges. In addition, generation schedules have been aligned with power producers to ensure adequate electricity supply throughout the tournament.
Commitment to Consumer Protection
Dr. Suleman commended ECG and GRIDCo for adopting what he described as proactive and consumer-focused measures to safeguard electricity supply during the World Cup.
He said the initiatives demonstrate a strong commitment to serving the interests of Ghanaian consumers and ensuring that households, businesses and football fans can enjoy the tournament without major disruptions.
The PURC reiterated its commitment to protecting consumer rights and pledged to maintain close oversight of utility operations throughout the competition, while remaining ready to address any unforeseen issues that may arise.
