UN Session: Mahama Leads Ghana Delegation on Reparatory Justice

President John Dramani Mahama is set to lead Ghana’s delegation to a high-level Reparatory Justice UN Session in the United States, marking a significant moment in the country’s global advocacy on historical justice.

According to a statement by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President will depart Accra on Monday for New York and Pennsylvania to participate in events focused on reparatory justice and the remembrance of victims of the transatlantic slave trade.

High-Level UN Engagement

At the United Nations Headquarters in New York, President Mahama will convene and deliver a keynote address at a High-Level Special Event on Reparatory Justice.

The event, themed “Reparatory Justice for the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans and the Racialised Chattel Enslavement of Africans,” will bring together global leaders to address what officials describe as a “critical matter of historical injustice.”

On Wednesday, the President is expected to address the UN General Assembly during the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, where he will present Ghana’s position on a landmark resolution.

Ghana, acting with the backing of the African Union, is advocating for the formal declaration of “the trafficking of enslaved Africans and the racialised chattel enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.”

The resolution represents a major step in ongoing global discussions on reparatory justice, accountability, and the long-term impact of slavery on socio-economic inequalities.

Commemoration and Diaspora Engagement

The visit will begin with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the African Burial Ground National Monument, where President Mahama will pay tribute to enslaved Africans.

Beyond the UN engagements, the President will also visit Lincoln University to deliver a keynote address and interact with members of the Ghanaian community at Temple University.

The trip underscores Ghana’s expanding diplomatic efforts to build international consensus on reparatory justice while strengthening ties with the African diaspora.
