The planned sachet water price increase in Ghana will not take effect as earlier scheduled, following government intervention and fresh engagements with industry stakeholders.
In a statement issued on Monday, April 6, the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry confirmed that consumers can continue to buy sachet water at existing prices, after producers agreed to suspend the proposed adjustment.
“The Ministry assures the public that the price of sachet water will not increase today. Consumers can continue to purchase sachet water at the current price.” - Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry
Ministry Steps In to Halt Price Adjustment
The decision comes after the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP) had earlier announced plans to raise prices, citing growing pressure from a global shortage of polymers and higher production costs.
Industry players had linked the proposed increase to wider geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict involving Iran, which they say has affected the cost of key production materials on the international market.
Under the proposed review, sachet water prices were expected to rise to GH¢8 at the ex-factory level and as high as GH¢15 at the retail level, a move that sparked concern among consumers.
The Ministry said the suspension reflects government’s determination to shield consumers from immediate price shocks while efforts are made to resolve the concerns of manufacturers.
Sachet water remains one of the most accessible sources of drinking water for many households across Ghana, making any increase particularly sensitive in the current cost-of-living environment.
The latest decision is therefore likely to provide temporary relief, especially for low-income families who depend on sachet water for daily consumption.
Meeting Set for Lasting Solution
To address the underlying concerns in the sector, the Ministry has scheduled a follow-up meeting with the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) and NASPAWAP on Wednesday, April 8.
According to the statement, the discussions will focus on finding a more sustainable solution that balances production realities with affordability.
“The Ministry remains steadfast in working with all trade associations to resolve issues swiftly and maintain stability in the market.” - Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry
The outcome of the meeting is expected to shape the next steps for the sachet water industry and determine whether any future price review can be avoided or moderated.
