The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has assured employees of Ghana Digital Centres Limited (GDCL) that their jobs are safe despite the devastating floods that disrupted operations at the Accra Digital Centre.
Speaking to the Board, management and staff on Monday, July 13, the Minister dismissed fears of job losses following the June 29 floods, which damaged sections of the state-owned technology hub and temporarily disrupted business activities.
"We are not laying off any staff of GDCL, whether temporarily or permanently, because of the flood. Every one of you is assured of the continuity of your jobs." - Sam Nartey George
His remarks come less than two weeks after the Ministry intervened to overturn a decision by GDCL's management to suspend the employment contracts of all staff in the aftermath of the flooding. The Ministry described that decision as unacceptable and ordered its immediate reversal.
Flood recovery must become a turning point
While reaffirming government support, the Minister made it clear that preserving jobs should not be mistaken for maintaining the status quo.
Instead, he challenged management and staff to use the crisis as an opportunity to rebuild the company into a commercially viable and financially sustainable enterprise.
"Let's take this as the reset of the reset. Every staff member will have to play their role because it's not going to be business as usual," he said.
Mr. George stressed that the Ministry would continue to support recovery efforts while pursuing stronger corporate governance, improved operational efficiency and long-term institutional reforms.
Call for profitability
The Minister argued that Ghana Digital Centres possesses the assets and potential to become one of the country's successful state-owned enterprises if managed effectively.
He signalled that management would be held accountable for delivering stronger financial performance and ensuring the Centre remains competitive within Ghana's growing digital economy.
"With the assets you hold, there is no excuse for GDCL not to be profitable... It will not fail, not under my watch," he stated.
GDCL serves as a hub for technology companies, start-ups and innovation-driven businesses operating from the Accra Digital Centre.
Although the June 29 floods interrupted activities, recovery efforts have continued as government works to restore confidence among tenants, investors and players across Ghana's digital ecosystem.
