Zohran Mamdani Confirms Emergency U.S. Visa Approved for Mother of Javits Frimpong

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani says President Donald Trump has agreed to grant a Javits Frimpong mother visa request immediately, allowing the Ghanaian mother of the 15 year old killed in the Bronx to travel to the United States to say goodbye to her son.

Mamdani announced the development on Saturday after speaking directly with Trump about the family’s situation.

“The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone from thousands of miles away,” Mamdani said.

“Javits Frimpong’s mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person.

"I just got off the phone with President Trump and he has agreed to grant her visa immediately.” - Mamdani

Ghanaian officials are also assisting the family with the visa process, according to reports.

Teen Shot While Heading to School

Javits was shot in the abdomen shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, while on his way to school near Crotona Park in the Bronx.

He was taken to hospital but later died from his injuries.

Police had made no arrests as of Saturday and had not publicly identified a suspect or established a motive for the killing.

The teenager moved from Ghana to New York about a year ago to live with his father, Thomas Frimpong, while his mother remained in Ghana.

US Representative Ritchie Torres, who represents part of the Bronx, said the killing had left the community mourning a teenager “who should have had his whole future ahead of him.”

Father Raises Bullying Concerns

Thomas Frimpong has told reporters that his son had complained of being bullied at school shortly before the shooting.

He said the school principal informed him that two students had been suspended over an earlier incident involving Javits.

“It was the principal who told me,” he said. “He said two guys are disturbing my son so he has suspended the two guys.”

Police have not said whether that incident is connected to the shooting, and no motive has been officially established.

Mamdani said the city was mourning with the family. “All of New York City is mourning this tragedy,” he said.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has said Ghanaian officials in New York are coordinating with local authorities as investigations continue.
