Vice President Applauds Progress in Ghana Agricultural Agenda

The Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, has commended the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, for advancing the Ghana agricultural agenda through targeted programmes aimed at boosting food production and strengthening the sector.

During a working visit to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Vice President engaged with directors and staff to assess ongoing interventions designed to transform agriculture and ensure long-term food security.

Food Security at the Core

Addressing officials, Prof. Opoku-Agyeman stressed the central role of agriculture in national development, noting that “food is the first basic necessity of life,” and must remain a top priority. She urged stakeholders to sustain efforts toward achieving reliable and affordable food supply across the country.

She also highlighted the importance of inclusivity, praising women farmers for their growing contribution to food production. According to her, government-backed initiatives are creating opportunities for women to play a stronger role in the agricultural value chain.

The Vice President encouraged wider participation in the Institutional Farming initiative under the Feed Ghana Programme, calling on churches, security agencies, and individuals to invest in agriculture as a way to reduce imports and strengthen local production.

She further underscored the need for collaboration with research bodies such as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research to drive innovation and improve productivity. Strengthening research partnerships, she noted, is key to modernising the sector and ensuring sustainable growth.

Minister Highlights Impact of Interventions

For his part, Mr. Opoku outlined key programmes under the Feed Ghana initiative, including efforts to enhance value chains, create jobs, and improve farmers’ livelihoods.

He revealed that these interventions have contributed to a sharp decline in food inflation, dropping from 61 percent in 2023 to 3.8 percent in 2026.

He also spotlighted the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative, a poultry-focused programme aimed at increasing domestic production and reducing reliance on imports.

The Vice President assured the Ministry of continued government support in implementing policies that strengthen the agricultural sector.

She emphasized that sustained collaboration and innovation will be critical to achieving food security and advancing Ghana’s broader economic transformation agenda.
