About 23,000 people are currently living with HIV in the Western Region, while the region records an estimated three new infections every day, the Ghana AIDS Commission has disclosed.
The figures are contained in the Commission’s 2025 HIV estimates and projections released this year.
Speaking at an HIV/AIDS Stakeholders Review Meeting, the Western Regional Technical Coordinator of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Antonio Francis, said the region had recorded a slight decline in new infections.
He, however, warned that the progress could be reversed if authorities failed to combine effective treatment with stronger prevention measures.
Progress Threatened by New Infections
According to Mr Francis, the estimated number of newly infected persons had fallen from about 992.
He said the daily breakdown remained worrying.
“Per the 2025 HIV estimates and projections which were done by the Ghana AIDS Commission and the report came out this year, we can say that for the Western Region, we have roughly 23,000 plus people that we estimate are living with the virus in the region.” - Antonio Francis
He added that the figures translated into at least three new HIV infections each day across the region.
Push to End AIDS by 2030
Mr Francis cautioned that Ghana’s target of ending AIDS by 2030 would remain difficult to achieve unless new infections were reduced significantly.
He called for sustained attention to HIV testing, early treatment, prevention education and other measures capable of limiting transmission.
The review meeting brought together stakeholders to assess the region’s HIV response and identify gaps requiring urgent action.
The Commission’s warning comes as health authorities continue to push for wider access to treatment and stronger public awareness, particularly among populations considered vulnerable to HIV infection.
