Ghana, World Gold Council Sign MoU to Strengthen Responsible Small-Scale Mining

The World Gold Council Ghana MoU has received a major boost with the signing of a strategic agreement between the World Gold Council (WGC) and Ghana's Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources aimed at transforming the country's artisanal and small-scale mining sector.

The agreement, witnessed by Canada's High Commissioner to Ghana, Myriam Montrat, seeks to improve supply chain integrity, promote responsible gold sourcing and curb illicit gold trade and related financial flows.

Supporting Responsible Gold Production

Under the partnership, the two institutions will work to establish a nationwide network of trusted gold processing plants that operate in line with internationally recognised responsible sourcing standards.

The initiative will also support policy development, strengthen gold traceability and origin verification technologies, build the capacity of stakeholders and provide skills training for artisanal and small-scale mining communities.

As part of its initial commitment, the World Gold Council announced a US$250,000 development grant, the first contribution under a broader US$1 million programme supporting Ghana's Responsible Cooperative Mining and Sustainable Development Programme (rCOMSDEP).

The programme is expected to improve environmental stewardship, strengthen livelihoods and reinforce responsible mining practices while boosting confidence in Ghana's gold sector.

Canada welcomed the collaboration, describing it as an important step towards promoting sustainable resource development, strengthening governance and building transparent, resilient and inclusive mineral supply chains through cooperation between government, industry and local communities.
