The Abu Trica extradition case has taken another twist after the High Court in Accra rescheduled the hearing of an application seeking to halt the Ghanaian socialite's extradition to the United States.
The development was disclosed by his lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who said the court had directed both parties to appear on July 9 to argue the motion for a stay of execution.
"The High Court has just made an order bringing forward the date for hearing of motion to Stay the extradition of Abu Trica. Both parties must appear on 9 July," Barker-Vormawor wrote in a Facebook post on Monday.
Legal Battle Intensifies
The hearing follows a recent High Court decision ordering the extradition of Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, to the United States, where prosecutors want him to face allegations linked to an alleged US$8 million romance scam.
Reacting to that ruling last week, Barker-Vormawor suggested the proceedings had moved unusually quickly and indicated the legal battle could continue at the country's highest court.
"I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast tracked and a judge has just ordered his extradition. Hmmm. FBI 1 – Abu 1. I guess this issue goes to the Supreme Court," he wrote.
Next Hearing Could Shape the Case
Abu Trica has remained in custody since December 2025, although he was later granted bail in the sum of GH¢30 million with two justified sureties after spending several months in detention.
The July 9 hearing is expected to determine whether the extradition order will be temporarily suspended while further legal challenges are pursued, a decision that could significantly influence the next stage of the closely watched case.
