CUTS Welcomes New DStv Packages for Ghana Consumers

West African Regional Director of CUTS International, Appiah Kusi Adomako, has welcomed the new DStv packages announced by MultiChoice Ghana, saying the revised prices and channel combinations give consumers more practical choices.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, October 26, Mr Adomako said feedback he had received suggested subscribers were positive about both the pricing and how content had been grouped.

“I want to say that this package reduction is something that fits well with consumers.

“The impression is that DStv has done very well, not just in terms of the pricing, but also how the channels have been curated.” - Mr Adomako

Sports Package Offers More Choice

Mr Adomako singled out the new GH¢250 Sports Pack as an example of a more targeted subscription option.

Under the new structure, customers primarily interested in football will no longer have to subscribe to a more expensive premium package simply to access sports content.

“If you are a person who wants to watch soccer, you don’t need to pay so much like in the previous package,” he said.

MultiChoice Ghana announced four packages ranging from GH¢50 to GH¢570 per month, with the new structure taking effect on November 5, 2026.

Lower Prices Could Attract Subscribers

Mr Adomako said MultiChoice was likely to have considered the possibility of gaining more customers before agreeing to lower subscription costs.

“By reducing prices, it’s going to increase the number of subscribers,” he said.

He cautioned, however, that sustaining the lower prices would also depend on controlling piracy and the use of illicit decoders, which can undermine subscription revenue.

Foreign exchange movements could also affect pricing in the future.

Mr Adomako said a weakening cedi could force MultiChoice to make modest adjustments to protect its operations.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they decide to increase marginally so that they take profitability and stay in business,” he said.

For now, he said the revised packages represent a positive outcome for consumers seeking more flexibility in what they pay for and watch.
